Tummy bug symptoms - Mum i feel sick....

Tummy bug symptoms - Fleximed training

These are those 4 little words that no mum, or dad for that matter like to hear!

The dreaded tummy bug or Norovirus (aka winter vomiting bug): This virus is highly contagious and causes vomiting and Diarrhoea in people of all ages. Unfortunately there is no cure for Norovirus and it has to just run its course!

There are at least 25 different types of noroviruses and are the most common cause of stomach bugs in the UK. Despite being also called the winter vomiting bug, it can be caught at any time of the year. There is no specific treatment for Norovirus but it is very important to stay hydrated so try and sip plenty of water whilst ill. Paracetemol will help with any aches or pains associated with the virus. You should stay at home for 48 hours after you have been symptom clear.

PREVENTION As always prevention is better than a cure but we all know that without walking around in a full bubble wrapped suit it is near impossible to never become exposed to germs and bacteria (especially if you have children or work in high risk areas).

Here are some helpful tips on what can help to prevent the virus spreading 1) Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after using the toilet and before preparing food. If you have small children wash their hands thoroughly as well 2) Do not share towels, flannels or sponges as these can harbour germs 3) Disinfect any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated with the virus. It's best to use a bleach based cleaner. There are also plenty of anti-bacterial sprays available in supermarkets and some kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. 4) Wash any items of clothing or bedding which may have become contaminated. Wash the items separately and on a hot wash. 5) Clean in and around toilets, especially after episodes of vomiting/diarrhoea 6) Avoid eating raw or unwashed foods. Remember as always, if you are concerned about anything then seek medical advice from your GP. We do offer infection control courses - Basic and for healthcare professionals.
